How It Works

Four stages, each written twice: once for the operator running Relay, once for the person holding the phone.

How Relay sits on the phone

The same message, handled where it lands.

Installation

Walkthrough
  • · Relay is provisioned for an organisation — the operator runs the Relay service and opens the admin console.
  • · The operator adds each person as a user. Adding a user instantly generates that person's join code.
  • · The person installs the Relay Android app (from a link the operator sends, or an app store listing) and approves the install when the phone prompts.
  • · They open the app once — it's ready for the code.
  • · Requirements: an Android phone with a SIM, and the SIM that receives the messages (and money texts) you want handled.
Consumer notes
  • · Install the Relay app on your Android phone using the link you were sent.
  • · If your phone asks whether to allow the install, tap Allow / Install anyway.
  • · Open the app — you'll see a screen asking for a code.
2

Setup & Configuration

Walkthrough
  • · Link the phone — the person enters the join code they were given and taps Link. The phone is now tied to that code and can't be linked elsewhere without the operator resetting it.
  • · Grant permissions — the app asks to read incoming SMS (to forward the ones you choose) and, on the Dashboard, to read messages (for the money figures). Contacts access is optional and only used to show names instead of numbers.
  • · Rules are configured for them — the operator sets, per user, which messages forward, to whom, and how they're worded (with sensitive figures like balances hidden if needed). Nothing message-related needs configuring on the phone.
  • · Optional personal settings — theme (light / dark / auto), and, for a phone that will send on the team's behalf, a single Gateway switch.
Consumer notes
  • · Type in your code and tap Link.
  • · Tap Allow on the permission prompts — Relay needs to see your texts to forward the ones that matter, and to read your money messages for the dashboard.
  • · Forwarding starts straight away. You don't set up rules — that's handled for you.
  • · In Settings you can choose a light or dark look, or let it match your phone.

Mobile Money Integration

Walkthrough
  • · Relay does not connect to a mobile-money account, API, or PIN. It reads the transaction confirmation texts the provider already sends to the phone.
  • · Currently it recognises AirtelMoney (Zambia) messages — received, sent, withdrawals, payments, and till payments. Messages from any other sender (a person, a bank, another forwarding app) are ignored for money figures.
  • · It understands both "K" and "ZMW", pulls the real transaction amount (not the balance or commission), and counts a transfer once even when Airtel sends it as two or three texts.
  • · Transactions are dated by the time in the message itself and grouped by calendar month (Zambia time).
  • · For sending messages onward, Relay can route through a bulk-SMS provider, a messaging channel, or a dedicated phone's SIM — configured by the operator, invisible to the user.
Consumer notes
  • · Relay reads the AirtelMoney texts you already receive — there's nothing to connect and no mobile-money PIN or login involved.
  • · Only AirtelMoney messages count toward your totals. Texts from people or other apps don't affect the numbers.
  • · It's reading messages already on your phone, but needs a data or Wi-Fi connection to sync those figures to your dashboard.

Dashboard Overview

Walkthrough
  • · Month selector across the top — every month that has activity.
  • · Ring: green is money received, red is money sent, sized to the split for that month.
  • · Centre: net figure for the month and the transaction count.
  • · Received / Sent cards below the ring.
  • · Report buttons: Today, This week, This month, and a full monthly report — each opens a formatted statement you can save as PDF, print, or share.
  • · Recent transactions: a running list with direction, counterparty, date, and amount.
  • · Figures are also sent up to the operator's console, so the web dashboard and any staff reports show the same numbers.
Consumer notes
  • · Open the Dashboard tab.
  • · Pick a month using the chips at the top.
  • · The ring shows money in versus money out; the middle number is what you're left with for that month.
  • · Tap Today / This week / This month for a statement you can save or print.
  • · Your recent transactions are listed underneath.
  • · Each month stands on its own — a new month starts from zero, it doesn't pile onto the last one.
